I say at least once a day, me and the bf live together but he calls me a few times everyday while I'm at work, just to chat, find out what I want for supper etc

It really depends on your relationship.  I call my man every day, long distance or not. If i don't call him, he calls me.
Start off slow, maybe once a week? If you really really wanna talk to him, just do it! You shouldn't be with some asshole who thinks you are obsessive for wanting to simply speak with him.

If all else fails, just ask him whathe's  comfortable with. You also shouldn't be with some asshole who expects you to read their minds (refuses to talk).
